Looking for insurance

Pharmacy programs

Escalating drug costs are becoming the primary contributor to the overall rising cost of healthcare. Many self-funded employer groups are responding by providing managed pharmacy programs to their health plan participants. Pharmacy programs can eliminate paper claim forms and employ technology for electronic pharmacy claims processing.

Other available features may include:

  • A drug utilization review program that evaluates the patient's medication history with each prescribed medication to ensure against potentially dangerous drug interactions;
  • Incentives that encourage the use of generic drugs where appropriate;
  • Agreements with participating pharmacies that offer insured groups the lowest available prices;
  • Claims summary reports that provide important analytical data.

Benefits to pharmacists and members

When a member presents a prescription at a participating pharmacy, the pharmacy program computer network will instantly alert the pharmacist to the following:

  • Any potential harmful interaction of the medication about to be dispensed with any other medication that the member may already be taking;
  • Whether this medication may duplicate another medication being taken;
  • Whether the prescribed dosage or strength is appropriate for the age of the patient.

These features help save money and promote good health for group members.
